Kathryn Higgins, Founder of Mother Love Herbal Company talked to us about organic products for pregnant women and kids and about the importance of breastfeeding. Tell us a little bit about your background/story and what inspired you to create Motherlove.
I lived a ‘back to the land’ lifestyle for several years, learning about the wild plants and the herbs around me. When I got pregnant with my daughter I focused on creating products with these herbs to help with the usual pregnancy and childbirth concerns – stretch marks, sitz bath, sore nipples and diaper rash.

I started teaching people how to identify their wild medicinal and edible plants. During a class a store owner approached me and asked about selling these products that I was sharing with friends. I chose the name Motherlove for the niche market, as well as the love for Mother Earth. I was working from the kitchen table and gathering all the herbs for quite awhile. Now Motherlove is trademarked in over 40 countries with distributors all over the world. It took 20 years to get to this point!

What did you want to be when you were a kid and...how many kids did you want to have?!
I had no clue what I wanted to be, but I wanted 32 kids. I'm serious! I had them all named. This was obviously before I knew what it took, so I've downsized since then. I have three daughters. Silencia, the oldest, is the baby that got me started on this journey. She now works with me running the company.

What do mothers need to watch out for when pregnant that they might not know?
Your skin is your largest organ. Everything is absorbed. Just remember that everything you eat and put on your body is absorbed. Our environment is inundated with chemicals. You have to do the best you can by educating yourself. I find that pregnancy is when most women start to think more seriously about local, organic and clean.

What's the biggest lesson you learned while starting Motherlove?
Everyone should be treated with respect. Competitors, employees, customers – everyone. Timing is very important. I didn't have a business plan, I just walked through the open doors at the right time.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
I can be anywhere in the world, and I’m here in Colorado. I travel once a month or so for business, and I love it. And, I love to come home to Colorado.

Describe a typical day in your life.
There is no typical day. Every day is different. I have great employees that run the day to day of the business when I travel. Sometimes I'm in the office, of course. I'm a mom and I am a business woman, everyday is unto itself.

Why is breastfeeding so important?
It’s the best food for a baby. It’s our god-given food. It’s the food that our bodies were made to give to our babies. It is the healthiest food for the mom, baby and environment.

What's a natural/non-toxic product kids should never live without?
It's not a product, but I would say Nature. All kids need the chance to be outside and in nature. Roll in the grass, climb a tree or play in a garden.

If there is one thing/thought/idea that you could pass on to the next generation, what would it be?
Take care of the earth. This is our home. Do the best you can to walk gently. Evaluate everything you do, and its impact on the earth and on others.
