Keratosis Pilaris is a common skin condition that the founder of High Quality Organics encountered after she had kids, as a chemist she then decided to create her own lotion, oils and scrubs to try to solve the problem, and she was successful! All while using pure, natural and organic ingredients. Read her story and find out what ingredients she recommends staying away from.

Tell us a little bit about the background and the story of High Quality Organics.
The High Quality Organics concept began in 2008 out of a need to take care of my problem skin. After having 2 beautiful children, my skin became quite sensitive; and I developed a condition known as Keratosis Pilaris, or more commonly - chicken skin.

After several fruitless visits to the dermatologist and high-end spas, I finally decided to use my education and talent as a chemist for over 10 years in the corporate sector to develop a natural, organic product that I could not only use on myself but on my children as well.

Months of formulation development provided a product that moisturized my skin, controlled my condition, and did not irritate me. I then began to use my Premium Body Oil on my family with beautiful results.

What are some ingredients women should watch out for in skincare products?
The top of my list of materials to look out for are parabens of any kind. Parabens are used as preservatives, which all water based formulations need. We just don't need them to be carcinogens.

The next material is petroleum or mineral oil. These do a good job coating, but they clog your pores and weigh down the hair.

And lastly I am not a huge of nanotechnology when it comes to skin and hair care. These materials are great and truly innovative for electronics, however, our skin/scalp are porous. We absorb all kinds of materials on a daily basis, and the chemistry of nano beauty products is rarely natural.

Why do you think companies put such chemicals in things we're using in our skin?
Companies use these and other products for several reasons: search for the next best thing, to cut the cost of production and the easy of formulation. In other words, some materials just work and if there is no immediate or apparent concern it's used in formulation.

What's the biggest lesson you learned while starting High Quality Organics?
The biggest lesson I've learned while starting HqO is to not be afraid to step out of the comfort zone. The truth is my family and friends will buy from me but they cannot sustain or grow the business.

What's a common question you get when you tell people what you do?
The biggest question I get is 'how did you come to start your own skin care company (with much chagrin) It sounds like such a huge undertaking'. To be honest, it was an incredible task to me too when the idea began to take form.

What's the one thing you'd wish for if you had a magic wand?
If I had a magic wand, I'd bring into existence a fabulous marketing/social media/sales TEAM. In today's climate it's an absolute must for our industry.

If you had to choose... lipstick or lipbalm?
Lipbalm (tinted) = Soft lips

Describe a typical day in your life.
My day starts quietly and peacefully around 5:30am. THEN I wake up my boys (4 and 6) at 6:30, we're off to the races with school and work. My work day is filled with research, testing, writing, sales and product development. Then we all meet back home late afternoon (my dear husband picks up the boys) for dinner, karate, homework and chores. At 8pm I start the next phase of my business of production, packaging, and order filling.

What are your top 3 best sellers?
My best sellers are the Gentle Scrub, Premium Body Oil, and Creme Shea. In the fall, we will introduce an organic, gentle soap for the body and face.

If there is one thing/thought/idea that you could pass on to the next generation, what would it be?
We as a society have gotten into such a big hurry and my belief is that some substance has been lost, namely patience. Take your time, learn and develop the thing that gives you the most joy.
