Prevent Bed Bugs with Logic Products

We talked with the founder of Logic Product Group, Jill Taft. She created a line of non-toxic bed bug treatments, lice treatment and lice prevention products in order to protect and prevent yourself from bringing home any unwanted bugs from hotel rooms or schools. As we all know bed bugs are becoming an epidemic in many people's homes, it started at hotels and has affected several families. Tell us a little bit about the background and the story of Logic Product Group.
My daughter got head lice in the first grade several times and it kept going around the classroom. Many parents, including myself, were at their wits end, literally. I was unhappy with the products to treat head lice that were currently on the market-none of which worked for us, and that started the ball rolling.

I would lay awake at night, getting up to check my daughter’s hair with a flashlight and realized I was becoming so obsessed with lice that I needed to empower myself by learning more about prevention and treatment.

I developed LiceLogic after more than a year of research and field work. A while later, I rented a summer house for my family in the Hamptons and it turned out to be infested with bed bugs. I couldn’t believe it. I took my knowledge of lice (an arthropod similar to the bed bug) and that is how BedbugLogic came to be.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
A doctor and a princess, not necessarily in that order.

Why is there a bed bug epidemic going on and how can we prevent it as much as possible?
Bedbugs have made a resurgence over the last few decades due to the 1972 ban on the use of DDT in our country. DDT was once a very effective way to treat bedbug infestation. Unfortunately, it wasn’t very good for the environment or people. Since then bed bugs have also built up resistance to alternative pesticides that have been used.

Another reason for this current epidemic is the increase in travel and population across all continents. Bedbugs are notorious hitchhikers and can hide on people’s clothing and luggage.

The best way to prevent bedbugs is to know the signs to look for and, even more importantly, to take preventative measures. Protect yourself and your belongings, especially while traveling. Everyone should have a basic knowledge of bedbugs and know the signs to spot a presence. Inspect your living area frequently, especially around the bed areas, in hotels and any place you may be spending the night. Also check your office, dressing rooms in retail stores, movie theater seats, airplane seats; anywhere that is frequented by lots of people. All it takes is one to start a problem. What are some nasty ingredients we need to watch out for in conventional bed bug killers out there?
Many conventional products out there use pesticides as their active ingredient. They come in many different forms with names that are usually difficult to pronounce. Bedbugs appear to have built up a resistance to most of these pesticides and many people, including pest control professionals, are frustrated at their ineffectiveness. I do not want to name any of them by their full names, but they often end in ‘ ide, in, ene, rin, and ren’ to name a few.

What's the biggest lesson you learned while starting Logic Product Group?
It is important to understand that our customers are buying our products because they are looking for a non-toxic solution to battle head lice and bedbugs and may need some advice or support. Many of our customers are going through a difficult time dealing with these critters and do not know where to turn as they feel ashamed or embarrassed and are unable to tell anybody. I always encourage our customers to contact me with any questions or concerns, even if they just want to talk to someone who has been through what they are going through. Dealing with bedbugs and lice can be incredibly stressful for many people. Fear, stress, and isolation are common effects.

What's the one thing you'd wish for if you had a magic wand?
That lice and bed bugs would go away forever and nobody had to endure them, or if they had to stay to preserve nature’s eco-system they would stop biting and sucking our blood, or at the very least ask first and then apologize!

What's a common question you get when you tell people what you do?
Most people are a little shocked and then they ask why did you develop these products? When I tell them the reason some people actually back away slowly!

Describe a typical day in your life.
I have two young children so I am up pretty early doing the ‘getting ready for school’ routine. Once the kids are at school, I answer emails and phone calls from clients, check out the latest stories in the news on bedbugs and head lice, call the factory, do an inventory check, monitor sales and customer feedback, talk with our PR company, retailers, and then continue to do research and think about product development and figure out what other products are needed in the market place that relate to these issues. Everyday is different.

BarkLogic is a line I recently developed and is launching in the coming weeks. It is a line for dogs and other animals that will treat and prevent ticks, fleas, and other arthropods. There is so much work to do that I usually continue to work after dinner well into the night. The days really fly by.

What are your top 3 best sellers?
All our products are selling equally well. When we launched I thought there would be some products that would end up being our best sellers, but that has not been the case, which is a good thing in my mind as people find all of our products helpful.

If there is one thing/thought/idea that you could pass on to the next generation, what would it be?
Be mindful of the footprint you are leaving on our earth. It is each person’s responsibility as a citizen of the earth to be mindful and treat our planet well. Mankind for too long has been using the earth as a garbage pail and it needs to stop. It requires everyone’s participation. The age old saying ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ is so true.
